Safely Back in the Water with SafeSplash

Swimming is a very important and vital life skill, especially in Texas where swimming pools are our only means to escape the heat for a large chunk of the year. As we saw in 2020, and are anticipating again for 2021, taking a dip in a chlorinated pool is one of the safest recreational activities available to us as we continue to navigate through this pandemic. But as we anticipate spending more time in the water again this summer, it’s vitally important that our children know how to swim. We can’t forget that their safety in the water is just as important as their safety out of the water. That’s why it’s time to start preparing for the warmer months and thinking about swim lessons at SafeSplash Swim School.

Swimming is a Life Skill

My kids recently attended their first swim lesson at the Frisco location of SafeSplash Swim School. SafeSplash is a professional swim school with a proven and reputable curriculum. I spoke extensively with the Frisco/North Plano SafeSplash owners, Mike and Monica Scrivner, about the SafeSplash experience. They informed me that each SafeSplash school is locally owned and operated by certified instructors (y’all already know how much I love to support small local businesses, and this is a great one). SafeSplash firmly believes that “swimming is a life skill” and, therefore, they “approach each lesson with great skill, care, passion, and individual attention.”

Perfect for Beginners through Advanced Swimmers

SafeSplash Frisco/North Texas offers swim lessons to swimmers of all levels, beginner through advanced, serving ages 2.5 through adults. They even have a summer swim team- The Wave- for advanced swimmers. The Frisco/North Plano classes are currently held in the heated indoor pool at LA Fitness, conveniently located at Preston and 121 in Frisco. Each class is 30 minutes in duration, is tailored to each swimmer’s individual level and needs, and is taught by a certified swim instructor using SafeSplash curriculum.

My kids are a little older, ages 6 and 8, and are fairly adept in the water. However, they have never attended professional swim lessons, so while they are skilled enough to be fairly safe in the water, doggy-paddling doesn’t always cut it. I believe it’s important, for their physical safety in the water and my peace of mind, for them to learn some finer points of swimming, including the potentially life-saving skills of floating, proper breathing, and specific strokes. SafeSplash’s curriculum is more than enough to set my mind at ease.

SafeSplash Curriculum: The Building Blocks of Swimming

In our first class, our instructor and the owner, Mike Scrivner, explained that learning to swim, and swimming well, is like building blocks- you have to have a firm foundation before moving on to new levels. So SafeSplash starts at the beginning- feeling comfortable in the water and learning to hold your breath. Once mastered to the instructor’s satisfaction, students may then move on to mastering more advanced skills, such as floating and learning specific swimming strokes and proper technique. SafeSplash instructors keep a detailed record of each students’ progress as part of a learning checklist, which parents are able to view at any time.

During our lesson, I was surprised at first with how rusty my kids were at some basic skills since we hadn’t been in the water for several months. But as the instructor evaluated their skill level and their lesson progressed, I could see the dots reconnecting. They were then able to continue through the lesson at a pace that seemed comfortable for them. And they just couldn’t stop smiling and high-fiving each other- they really had a blast while they were learning!

COVID Safety Protocols

In addition to water safety, SafeSplash is also taking safety regarding COVID-19 very seriously. SafeSplash has adopted all CDC recommendations and guidelines, and has gone above and beyond to keep their students and instructors safe. Here are the COVID-19 safety guidelines SafeSplash currently has in place:

  • Masks required for all individuals entering and exiting the gym and pool area

  • Reduced class size with a maximum of 3 students per class

  • Instructors wear plastic face shields in and out of the water (students are not required to wear masks or shields in the water during lessons)

  • Social distancing of spectators with only one parent or guardian attending; parent/guardian must remain masked

  • Limited number of families in the facility at any one time

  • Cleaning and disinfecting of all equipment

  • Changing rooms and showers are closed- arrive dressed and ready to swim

  • Arrive no more than 5 minutes early to allow for as little family overlap as possible

A Comfortable and Worthwhile Experience

Overall, I felt very comfortable during our first lesson with SafeSplash Frisco/North Plano. All COVID safety protocols are being rigorously followed, and I felt that we were safe in the pool environment. My kids were the only two in their class, which worked to their advantage both from a COVID perspective as well as providing more individual attention from the instructor. I am also very excited about the curriculum SafeSplash uses. My kids came away from the lesson really encouraged and eager to go back. They learned and implemented life-saving skills, yet left feeling like they’d just had a really fun time swimming together. Win-win!

Register with SafeSplash

Registration for swim lessons with SafeSplash Frisco/North Plano is now open online here: safesplash.com/locations/frisco-north-plano-tx. Weekly or bi-weekly spots are available. Each class is 30 minutes and meets at LA Fitness in Frisco (Preston and 121 location). The LA Fitness pool is immediately to right when you enter the gym, and I appreciated not having to walk more than 20 feet into the gym to get where we needed to be. In a world that is difficult to navigate at this current time, I was grateful that SafeSplash made the process easy and safe, while providing such a valuable service to our family. I highly recommend SafeSplash Frisco/North Plano for your kids’ swim lessons!

Cozy Comforts for the New Year

The cold winter months always make me want to curl up, hibernate and get my hygge on, but living through the disaster that was 2020 has turned that annual desire into a full-blown, screaming need for self-care. So will you join me in a little self care this month as we tentatively welcome 2021 from under the cover of our comfy and cozy blankets?

Here are my favorite cozy comforts for welcoming the new year!

Finding Joy When the Holidays Are Hard

Today marks fourteen years since my dad passed away unexpectedly. He was 48 and healthy. We buried him on Christmas Eve. That means I’ve had fourteen years of, let’s call it … complicated … Christmases. Am I supposed to act ok and happy? Does it make others feel awkward if I’m not shiny and sparkly right now? But if I act too sad, will people think it’s weird since it’s been 14 years now? (To those untouched by the untimely death of a parent, I get it- 14 years seems like a long time, enough time. But somehow it’s just not.)

About the time you think you’ve got a hold on yourself, the holidays come and start chipping away at the strength and defenses you’ve built up through the year. It’s always hard to lose someone close to you, but it seems especially difficult to face an anniversary smack dab in the middle of the holidays. Such a traumatic event at this time of year shadows all future Christmases, even fourteen years later. The loss isn’t as acute, but a deep ache remains.

So I’m not here to tell you that the untimely and sudden death of a parent gets easier or better; it doesn’t. But it does get different over the years. The gift of time has given me the ability to be less triggered by every father-daughter duo I see, to process my emotions and feelings more internally without turning into an absolute mess on the outside. And there are a few holiday-specific coping mechanisms I’ve learned to implement when I feel the ache start to creep in more than usual. If the holidays are hard for you for whatever reason, I’d love for you to practice some of these holiday coping mechanisms along with me.

HELP OTHERS
The best and fastest way to drag myself out of a funk is to be of service to others. Fortunately, the holiday season offers plenty of ways to serve our fellow man. If you need a pick-me-up, head to your local food bank, soup kitchen, nursing home, church, etc. The holidays are so hard for so many people- not just those who have lost loved ones. Helping others in even small ways ultimately helps me more.

DIVE IN
One way I can feel the ache and depression sneaking up on me is through a lack of motivation. I think things like, “I know my kids would really enjoy [seasonal activity], but I’d really rather just stay home.” But I’ve learned over the years to just dive in, even when I don’t want to. I almost always end up feeling uplifted, refreshed, and better about myself as a wife, mother, and human. It doesn’t have to be anything big or overwhelming- something as simple as driving around local neighborhoods to look at Christmas lights usually does the trick for me. Then once I’ve built up a little momentum, I feel like I’m better equipped to participate in other events.

GO TO CHURCH
You may be surprised to learn that this one is tricky for me. In the immediate aftermath of my dad’s passing, I started questioning everything I thought I knew about God. It took me years to work through things with Him, and I still struggle sometimes, especially at the holidays. But there really is no better feeling than singing “fall on your knees” in worship during the Christmas season. Many churches switch to Christmas music and carols the Sunday after Thanksgiving, and each worship service serves to lift my spirits. Even if you’re on the fence about God or religion, I believe there is power in gathering with others, even if your express purpose it to belt out of few carols with a full band as back-up.

TWINKLY LIGHTS
And finally… Don’t underestimate the power of twinkly lights. Is there anything more magical than laying under your Christmas tree and staring up at the lights? Not to me. Add my kids when they’re in calm and contemplative moods, and that’s a recipe for joy every time. It’s a great way to capture your audience and make them talk to you about things that are important to their young hearts. And you may even get the chance to tell them a few things about the grandfather they never got to meet but who would love them with his whole heart.

Merry Christmas, friends. Let’s try to remember that the holidays are really hard for some and extending grace to them may make all the difference.

Christmas at the Hilton Anatole: A Magical Family Tradition

We have discovered the Christmas event that will make this Christmas seem, if not normal, then at least worth celebrating. We found our Christmas spirit when we attended Christmas at the Anatole at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas last weekend, and I’m excited to tell you about it. Thank you for the complimentary stay, Hilton Anatole! All opinions in this review are my own.

Christmas at the Anatole

Christmas at the Anatole is a long-running, annual celebration at the hotel each Christmas. Traditionally, the big feature was Peppermint Park, a large outdoor event with lots of twinkle lights, games for kids, bouncy houses, character interactions, and general holiday merriment. But with the challenges of this year, Peppermint Park has been put on hold.

In place of the traditional Peppermint Park, the hotel has installed a more mild, elegant version of Christmas at the Anatole. Through our Santa Suite Package, we got to experience various holiday activities safely spread throughout the vast open spaces of the hotel, including family table games like Jenga, Scrabble, and checkers, as well as a holiday arts and crafts station, Christmas Bingo, and indoor cornhole. We also enjoyed marveling at Tipsy the Tree on stilts, munching on flatbreads (and hot toddies for the adults) from the North Pole Cafe, and exploring the Anatole’s beautiful Asian-inspired interior decor. But the main event of the night was the VIP Meet and Greet with Santa and Mrs. Claus, where we got to drink hot cocoa, nibble delicious Christmas cookies (locally sourced from the Konfectionary Bakery in Aubrey), and mingle with the Clauses (masks on, of course). Blitzen even made an appearance for photos! After all the excitement, we were happy to toast s’mores on the outdoor fire pits and then settle down to watch a Christmas movie on the big screen in the ballroom, where family seating areas were staggered throughout the large room to allow for plenty of physical distancing.

IMG_9892.jpg

Santa Suites

Our Santa Suite package included a one-night stay in a Santa Suite. The suite included a decorated table-top Christmas tree, a few Christmas goodies, and incredible views of the Dallas skyline. The rooms at the Anatole are equally as impressive as the rest of the hotel, extending the Asian-inspired design and decor tastefully through each room. We loved hanging out in our suite- my son kept calling it our “little house” and said he wanted to live there forever. Being there was pure magic for them and something I think they’ll always remember. And the children’s murphy wall bed was a huge hit!

Breakfast with Santa

After our long winter’s nap in our Santa Suite, we awoke refreshed and excited for Breakfast with Santa and Mrs. Claus! Breakfast with Santa is included in the Santa Suite package, or can be attended independently from a stay at the hotel. So if you’re unable to stay overnight, your family can still experience a lovely Breakfast with Santa at the Anatole on a morning of your choosing.

Several kids wore their Christmas pajamas to breakfast, including ours, which added to the fun. The food served at the breakfast exceeded our exceptions, both in quality and quantity. Chocolate chip pancakes, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, blintzes, bacon, sausage, potatoes, and on and on… Not to mention the custom breakfast taco and omelette stations, as well as mimosa and Bloody Mary bar. We truly enjoyed our breakfast, as well as the festive atmosphere of the ballroom, the jovial attitudes of the Clauses and Anatole staff members, and our time as family as we reveled in the holiday spirit. It was just what we needed to kick our Christmas spirit into high gear.

Is it worth it?

In my opinion, absolutely. Depending on which package and night you choose to stay, the cost can get up there a little. But my opinion is that if this is your one big Christmas event of the season (and it is worthy of being that big event), booking the Santa Suite Package that includes the overnight stay, VIP experience, and Breakfast with Santa is worth the price. Likewise, if you’re looking for a smaller or complimentary event to your other Christmas season festivities, booking only Breakfast with Santa is also worth the cost, in my opinion ($45/adult, $20/child). We had a truly great experience, we felt safe the entire time we were there, and we look forward to many more years of Anatole Christmases!

Details

Christmas at the Anatole and Breakfast with Santa events run on select dates November 28-December 23. Package details and information, as well as booking options, can be found at Christmas at the Anatole.

Celebrating Advent in 2020: Religious and Non-Religious Ideas

This may come as a surprise to you, as it did to me, but there is more to Advent than countdown calendars with tiny chocolates hidden behind numbered cardboard doors. But as I’ve grown older and have sought out holiday traditions to start in my own family, Advent (beyond the countdown calendars) is something I look forward to every year. Whether you’re a religious household or not, an Advent celebration or two is worthy to be placed among your family’s holiday traditions.

Relaxing Family Getaway: Margaritaville Lake Resort

Margaritaville Lake Resort is a beautiful, newly-renovated luxury resort nestled on the shores of Lake Conroe in quaint Montgomery, Texas. The completely renovated and expanded resort opened to acclaim in June and has been a top destination for families seeking fun, relaxation, and unique experiences since then. An easy 3.5 hour drive southeast from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Margaritaville is the perfect waterfront resort for a relaxing family getaway.

The Margaritaville Hotels and Resorts family includes prime properties around the world, with 23 locations in 20 cities across 6 countries. The resorts take pride in their Jimmy Buffett-inspired roots, with a multitude of hat tips to the music legend throughout their properties, from the music playing on speakers, to very unique and intentional decor choices. We loved the feel of the Lake Conroe resort- it was just campy and elegant enough to be fun and uplifting without being tacky and obtrusive. We loved identifying all the Jimmy Buffett and island lifestyle details, like a treasure hunt!

ACCOMODATIONS

The Margaritaville building and grounds on Lake Conroe have gone through several changes over the years. Most recently, Margaritaville acquired the property and worked tirelessly over the course of a year to completely renovate and expand the existing hotel, officially opening their doors in June 2020. As a result, the resort looks and feels brand new, light, and fresh.

The resort features 303 luxury suites and 32 of the cutest on-site cottages you ever did see. All rooms in the hotel are luxury suites, each featuring 600 square feet of space with separate living and sleeping areas, while each cottage features private accommodations on the water with easy access to all resort amenities.

We loved our balcony suite! It was very comfortable, well decorated, and welcoming, with plenty of room for our family of four. We also got to tour the Jimmy Buffett Suite and it knocked our socks off. It’s beautifully decorated in the same aesthetic as the rest of the hotel and would be the perfect place to host a small, family gathering.

AMENITIES

Jolly Mon Water Park

As a family with young kids, our favorite place on property was the Jolly Mon Water Park. We arrived just in time to experience the water park before the weather turned too cold. While the large slides were already closed for the season, the kids loved floating the lazy river and roaring through the splash structure. Across the way, the kids and adults alike enjoyed the heated pool and multiple hot tubs that are open year-round.

St. Somewhere Spa

This momma was overjoyed to experience a relaxing massage at the St. Somewhere Spa during our stay! The spa is located in its own building on the grounds and is an absolute oasis. From the relaxing sitting rooms and sauna to the calming treatment rooms and fully-equipped locker room, the St. Somewhere Spa should not be missed during your stay. All of the providers at St. Somewhere have at least 10 years of experience, and it shows. I received a CBD massage and back scrub from Connie that left me woozy (in a good way!) and totally relaxed.

Surf & Boat Rentals

Another highlight of our stay was a morning spent out on Lake Conroe in our private pontoon boat rental, fishing with provided equipment and exploring! I actually grew up around Lake Conroe so am familiar with the lake and was happy to experience some boating fun with my family. Einstein’s Surf & Boat Shop offers on-site water rentals of all kinds to Margaritaville guests: ski and pontoon boats, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, and even electric paddleboats, which are top on our list for our next visit.

FOOD AND DINING

On-Property Options

Margaritaville is home to several on-site restaurants that we enjoyed during our stay- we loved never having to leave the resort grounds to find a good meal! We enjoyed a sunset, lake-side dinner on the patio at LandShark Bar & Grill on our first evening, soaking in the laid-back vibe of the restaurant as well as the live music. After dinner, the kids got to play on the sandy beach at LandShark! We equally enjoyed meals, snacks, and drinks from the other on-site restaurants and cafés, including the License to Chill Café & Bar and Joe Merchant’s Coffee & Provisions

Sunset Dinner Cruise

During our stay, we were lucky enough to experience a Lake Conroe dinner cruise aboard The Little Palm Yacht. The cruise departed Margaritaville right at sunset and while aboard we were treated to passed hors d’oeuvres, a catered dinner (plated and served by masked and gloved caterers), and passed desserts on the open-air top deck of the yacht. It was a treat to experience the lake at night and was a fun and unique experience that we’ll always remember!

UPCOMING HOLIDAY EVENTS

Margaritaville Lake Resort has several upcoming holiday events that would be perfect for a holiday family getaway! These events include a Thanksgiving Jazz Brunch Buffet on November 26 and Breakfast with Santa on December 12. Santa arrives at the resort on a boat, y’all! And stays for brunch and pictures.

If you’re a golfing family, the resort also features a par-71 USGA-certified course for you to spend a day on the links. Or if mini golf and pickleball are more your speed, you can play both of those on the property as well. Road Trippin': 12 Kid-Friendly Podcasts & Apps for Long Drives

For many of us, the holidays are synonymous with a certain amount of travel to visit family and loved ones. If this summer was any indication of things to come, I think we can count on more time in the car than on an airplane this holiday season. Long road trips with kids can be tricky, but with a little pre-planning (and pre-downloading), any potential bumps in the road can be smoothed out with various entertainment options. If you’ve had your fill of Minecraft, Fortnite, and Roblox, check out this list of kids’ podcasts and apps to enjoy for a smooth-sailing holiday road trip.

Sleeping with the (Political) Enemy

Over the last year, we’ve seen most members on both sides of the political spectrum band together in support of their favored candidate, leaning on one another for mutual support and encouragement. Most likely, that mutual support and encouragement has bled over into your marriage or primary relationship, as the majority of couples tend to see eye-to-eye politically. But what if, like me, you live in a house divided? What if you are sleeping with the (political) enemy? [Insert overly dramatic soundtrack here.]

The Halloween Pivot: Creative Alternatives to Trick-or-Treating

This year has brought many disappointments and cancellations, and now it looks like the disappointments will extend into the holiday season. But what if we take some of these disappointments and pivot them into creative, out-of-the-box ideas with which both kids and parents can safely get on board? I love the notion of tweaking traditions to fit a new situation, so I’ve come up with a few ideas on ways to safely experience Halloween 2020!

5 Best Book Series for Reluctant Readers

But as they began to get older and more independent, I was finally forced to accept that my kids just aren’t big readers. At least not yet! I’m still holding out hope that this will be the year a reading spark is kindled in them. But until that day comes, I have to put a lot of thought and hard work into finding just the right books that match their personalities, preferences, and attention spans if there’s any hope of them cracking a book for more than a couple of minutes at a time.

Over the last few years, I’ve found several books for my reluctant readers, and even series, that they’re excited to read, and do so willingly. Now that school and mandatory independent reading time has started again, we’ll be revisiting some of these old favorites and hopefully adding to this list as we go. If you have a reluctant reader, be sure to check out these titles from your local library or add to your online shopping cart.

At-Home Learning Must Haves

We’ve been participating in an at-home learning situation for four days now and I’ve already come up with a list of things we absolutely need that I didn’t think of during my first round of planning. If you’re trying to make your at-home learning experience smoother, check out these items that are making a big difference for us. This list is totally random- I added to it as we ran into obstacles on this at-home school journey.

This post may contain affiliate links. All opinions are my own.

In the 5 months she’s been out of school, my daughter has developed some not-so-great habits, including holding her pencil in a unique (very incorrect) way. These pencil grips are already helping her develop better writing habits and stronger fingers!

I realized pretty quickly that we needed a couple of reading nooks in our house for quiet reading time, and for each of us to have a spot for when we need a break from all the hard things. Like school and teaching. These chairs are so comfy for the kids and they love having their own little nests!

Yes, we got all the supplies on the supply lists. But since our office space at home is limited, we’re finding these small, lightweight journals are a better option than large, heavy spirals. We use these for assignments that don’t require ruled lines, and for drawing/coloring brain breaks.

Have you tried actually using the erasers on top of the novelty pencils your kids love? Or worse yet, novelty erasers themselves? Maybe it’s the Enneagram 1 in me, but it makes my skin crawls not to be able to completely erase mistakes. But these classic pink erasers are as good as you remember! They’re saving my sanity.

My iPad has been taken over by a kid, which means my pretty, slim, subtle iPad case is no longer cutting it. It’s very important for my student to be able to prop the iPad up for our 4+ Zoom meetings a day. This specific case (linked) is the most versatile we’ve found and still provides extra protection when the iPad gets dropped. Repeatedly.

Anyone else trying to wrangle anywhere from 4 to 11 Zoom meetings a day? With multiple kids on calls at the same time, you will definitely need a few pairs of comfortable headphones. We prefer over-the-ear headphones, and I prefer corded rather than cordless because it keeps those little angles in their seats.

Watching a kindergartener try to draw letters with a finger on an iPad is quite painful. But a stylus with a pointed tip is the cure! Plus it helps develop those pencil-holding muscles and motor skills. (Be sure the stylus you choose is compatible with your device before ordering.)

What about you? What are the most helpful at-home school supplies and gadgets that are saving your life right now. Let me know in the comments!

A Young Family's Dream Car: Toyota Highlander

Toyota loaned me a Highlander Limited Platinum AWD for one week to drive and review. All opinions are my own.

Since becoming a mom almost 8 years ago, I’ve gone through my fair share of family cars, searching for just the right fit. I recently got to test drive the all-new 2020 Toyota Highlander Limited Platinum AWD for a week, and I think I may have found my SUV soulmate. The Highlander fit our family and our lifestyle perfectly!

Functional… and Fast!

I don’t normally think of SUVs as being especially fast or fun to drive, but the Highlander proved me totally wrong! After a few years of driving SUVs with a slower get-up-and-go, the Highlander was so much fun to zip around town in. It drives like a sporty car while still encompassing all the things I need in an SUV- lots of seating, lots of cargo space, and a tall and comfortable ride.

Favorite Features

The Highlander Platinum really spoiled me with all its functional features. These are a few of my favorites:

  • Second Row Captain’s Chairs: The Platinum trim level comes with captain’s chairs in the second row. This made it so easy for my kids to access the third row- no climbing over seats, kicking each other (and me) in the process.

  • Back-Up Camera: Let’s just say I’ve had a few run-ins (literally) where an advanced back-up camera would have been helpful. The cameras on the Highlander are INSANE in the best way. You can see the entire car- 360 degrees- in one view, making parking and backing up practically foolproof. Those cameras really boosted my confidence and even made me feel like parallel parking was no longer just a pipe dream.

IMG_4905.jpg
  • Head Up Display (HUD): If you want to feel like you’re living in the future, just drive a 2020 Highlander with a HUD. You never have to take your eyes off the road to check your speed or know which direction you’re driving thanks to the head up speedometer and compass. And the speed limit automatically updates and displays on the HUD so you never have to wonder if you’re driving the right speed. It’s like driving a spaceship and I loved it!

Family-Friendly

During our week with the Highlander, we lived life as we normally would- running lots of errands, eating on the go, and even going on a few adventures. I can honestly say my kids have never gotten along better in a car. The second row captain’s chairs were a lifesaver, keeping them separated enough to talk and play nicely with each other, and no one got kicked in the head climbing over a bench seat. They also had plenty of airflow from the dedicated second and third row A/C vents, which kept them nice, cool, and content in the 100+ degree Texas summer.

Road Trip!

During our week with the Highlander, we took it on a 200-mile road trip from our town of Frisco to Glen Rose, Texas. It was such a comfortable ride! A few weeks previous, my husband made a 1,200 mile road trip in a different SUV. During our drive to Glen Rose, he kept saying how he wished he’d been in the Highlander for that trip as well- it’s just so comfortable, easy to drive, gets great gas mileage, and the Highlander safety features are second-to-none. We’ll always remember our trip to the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, not only for the safe and comfortable drive there and back, but for all the fun we had as a family during these strange times we find ourselves in.

We truly loved our time with the Highlander. It’s the perfect family car, full of functional features, safety options, and traditional Toyota reliability. And it’s just a whole lot of low-maintenance fun for moms and dads to drive!

Vacation Guide: Door County, Wisconsin

We are fresh off our vacation to Door County, Wisconsin, and I can’t wait to tell you about it! My husband grew up taking family vacations to Door County, and now my family continues that tradition at least once a year. We love Door County for its beaches, its charming towns, slow pace, friendly people, entertainment opportunities, and that sweet, cool summer weather. We usually stay for about a week, but this year we decided to take an extended vacation and were there for almost two and a half weeks- a silver lining of COVID and being able to work remotely. It was amazing, as always, and we came back refreshed and ready to begin the school year, whatever that is going to look like this year.

But I know what you’re thinking… A vacation in Wisconsin? Really? Yes! Door County should be at the top of your travel list! Often referred to as the “Cape Cod of the Midwest,” Door County is a series of small towns (average population 700-800) strung along the scenic Northern Wisconsin peninsula, giving it a very New England vibe. The peninsula is surrounded by Green Bay on the west and Lake Michigan on the east, affording each town picturesque views, plentiful beaches, unique family-friendly activities, and cool lake breezes.

Why Door County?

Local Charm

My favorite thing about Door County other than the weather (seriously, I cannot stress how great the DC weather is, and no, I will not stop talking about it) is that the entire peninsula/county is unincorporated. Once you pass Sturgeon Bay on the south end of the peninsula, you won’t see any McDonald’s, Walmarts, Holiday Inns, or even 7-Elevens. All of Door County businesses are locally owned and operated, and many have been around for decades. The closest thing to a chain store there is a single Piggly Wiggly grocery store. It’s so refreshing to visit a place untouched by commercialism and consumerism! Each little town boasts its own charming town square with plentiful dining options and unique Door County experiences. You don’t have to drive far for a good meal or a good time, and you’ll never run out of options.

Weather

Yep, we’re back to Door County weather. On our latest trip in July, the highest temperature we experienced was 80 degrees. With the constant, cool lake breeze, that’s basically 75. We were wearing sweatshirts in the evenings and mornings, y’all! In July! Door County really shines in the summer, making it the best time to visit.

Ridges Beach, Baileys Harbor

We also love visiting Door County in the fall, specifically in October. The highs in October tend to be in the mid-50s, and there was even a light snow during one of our October trips. The crown jewel of Door County in the fall is the foliage- true autumn colors the likes of which many Texans have never seen. DC also turns into festival central in the fall, with many harvest festivals up and down the peninsula. October is also a great time to visit!

Something Different

As we all know, this year has been full of twists and turns and it looks like more are in store. This means that more people are getting creative with their family vacations and seeking out non-traditional options. Door County fits this requirement perfectly! It’s definitely unique- something not many Texans have experienced. And it’s possible to stay properly socially distanced in Door County. As in Texas, DC restaurants are open at limited capacity with an abundance of outdoor seating; pretty much everything you’ll want to do is outside in the fresh air (thanks, beautiful weather!); and mask wearing is required and enforced in all businesses and restaurants. If you want a unique experience that your family will remember for years to come, Door County is where you want to be!

Baileys Harbor Marina

Where to Stay

There are so many precious towns in Door County and all of them offer locally owned and operated accommodations- hotels, motels, condos, and B&Bs. There are also many charming Airbnb and VRBO properties available. Just be aware that things book up quickly for the busy seasons of June/July and October, so plan ahead. We are fortunate to have a family-owned home base for our Door County trips, but we have booked local accommodations several times and enjoyed our time at each one of them.

Sister Bay

Sister Bay is a hub for many things in Door County. It’s one of the larger towns and offers gems such as Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Butik (dine with goats on the roof!); a marina for booking a boat tour, parasailing, or a fishing charter; many extraordinary restaurants; and a beach on Green Bay.

Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Butik, Sister Bay

Baileys Harbor

Baileys Harbor is where we stay when we go to Door County. We love this tiny town. There is a farmer’s and artisan’s market on the square every weekend, a great playground for the kids during some downtime, really good restaurants, and Ridges Beach, which is semi-private and not often crowded.

Ridges Beach, Baileys Harbor

Ephraim

Ephraim is home to the best sunsets on the peninsula! It also offers plenty of restaurant and accommodation options, as well as its own beach and the sweetest little soda fountain you ever did see- Wilson’s Restaurant & Ice Cream Parlor, which has been around since 1906.

What to Do

Beaches

Door County has beaches everywhere you turn! Our go-to is Ridges Beach in Baileys Harbor, but there are so many other excellent options, such as Nicolet Beach in Peninsula State Park and the beach in Whitefish Dunes State Park. But if you’ve never been to a beach on a Great Lake, be warned- the water is chilly! As Texans who get cold when it hits 72 degrees, we tend spend more time playing on the beach than in the water, though we do take some pretty epic dips on warmer days. Just bring some sand toys and you’ll be set. It’s also a great idea to rent kayaks or paddle boards for a fun afternoon at the beach!

Cherry Picking

Door County is famous for it’s cherries, and mid-July is prime cherry picking time! Many working cherry orchards offer pick-your-own cherry opportunities in July. We love going cherry picking for the novelty of it, and of course the photo ops. And if you’re staying in a place with a full kitchen, you could always whip up your own cherry pie with your fresh Door County cherries! Or if you want to buy pre-made cherry treats, you must try Seaquist Orchard and Sweetie Pies.

If you’re visiting in the fall, many of these same orchards are deep into apple season and offer pick-your-own apples opportunities. There is something magical about picking apples in the crisp weather in the middle of an orchard... Door County apples make great pies, too!

Outdoor Experiences

Johnson’s Park Go Karts

Johnson’s Park, Sister Bay

No trip to Door County is complete without at least one track day at Johnson’s Park. It’s nothing fancy- just a ton of fun and smiles for the whole family. Johnson’s Park also has a mini golf course we usually work our way through after our laps.

Pirate’s Cove

Pirate’s Cove, Sister Bay

If it’s mini golf you’re looking for, head to Pirate’s Cove in Sister Bay. As far as mini golf courses go, this one is breathtaking and a ton of fun to work your way through. Kids love a well-executed pirate theme!

Peninsula State Park

Peninsula State Park, Fish Creek

Suit up and head out for a beautiful morning bike ride through Peninsula State Park! We love to rent bikes from Edge of Park Rentals in Fish Creek, then hop on the bike trail straight from their property. Edge of Park Rentals has something for everyone- adults’ and kids’ bikes, burleys, tag-alongs, tandems, even dog carts and mopeds! This was the first year our family completed the almost 10-mile bike trail loop through the park and it was such a great time! We took all the breaks to see the sights along the way- scenic overlooks, beaches, and lighthouses.

The Farm

The Farm, Sturgeon Bay

Want to make your kids’ day? Take them to The Farm in Sturgeon Bay to cuddle and bottle feed some kids (the baby goat kind)! The Farm also offers feeding opportunities for grown-up goats, sheep, horses, and donkeys. Walk the expansive grounds to see other wonders such as peacocks, rabbits, pigeons, pigs, gardens, and lots of local history. The goat milking experience is currently closed due to COVID, but will hopefully open again soon!

Cave Point County Park

Cave Point County Park, Jacksonport

Cave Point is probably the most scenic spot in Door County. This local park offers incredible views of Green Bay surrounded by beautiful cliffs and trees. If the water is calm enough, you’ll see people jumping off the iconic horseshoe cliff. My own kids took the plunge for the first time this year (we made sure there was a family member in the water below to help them to the side to climb out- would not recommend for anyone under my son’s age of 5.5, and even then I was a nervous momma). Cave Point is also a great place to rent kayaks and enjoy some time out on the water. We also like to hike the trails along the waterline.

Washington Island

Sand Dunes Park, Washington Island

Washington Island is the northernmost point of Door County. Spend a day riding the ferry over (there is no bridge) and playing on the island! (You can take your own car on the ferry, or rent an ATV for transportation once you reach the island.) Start with lunch at The Albatross Drive-In then head to our favorite spot on the island- Sand Dunes Park. The beach there offers lots of soft white sand, clear water, and dunes that our kids love running around on. This may have been our favorite beach time of the entire trip!

Where to Eat

There are so many delicious dining options in Door County, from super casual drive-ins and walk-ups to fine dining on the water at sunset. Door County is also known for their traditional fish boils (usually locally caught perch), so be sure to attend at least one of those. I’ve linked to several of our top favorite restaurants here, but I could go on and on and on… Please note that due to COVID, restaurant operations may be a little wonky (i.e., shorter hours, outdoor seating or to-go only, reservations required, limited menus, etc.).

White Gull Inn, Fish Creek

Sister Bay

Al Johnson’s- Swedish and American breakfast and lunch, the place with goats on the roof
CHOP- steakhouse and American fare
Lure- seafood

Fish Creek

White Gull Inn- great breakfast and American fare, nightly fish boil
Not Licked Yet Frozen Custard- walk-up burgers, hot dogs, and gnome custard with water view and small playground

Baileys Harbor

Harbor Fish Market & Grille- seafood, lobster boil, and gorgeous views
Chives- farm-to-table
Clover & Ash- Italian
Coyote Roadhouse- casual ribs and burgers, right on Kangaroo Lake

Ephraim

Wilson’s Restaurant & Ice Cream Parlor- burgers, sandwiches, ice cream treats

How to Get There

We’ve done it all, but most often we fly into either the Milwaukee or Green Bay airport and rent a car from there. It’s about a three hour drive from Milwaukee to Door County, and an hour and a half from Green Bay. We’ve also driven from Texas to Door County; it takes about 18 hours and necessitates at least one overnight stay on the road.

As you can see, we’re head over heels for Door County and plan to keep visiting for a long time to come. If you have any questions about visiting, I’d be happy to talk to you about our personal experiences and opinions- just comment below!

The Dirtiest Secret of Motherhood: Breastfeeding Struggles

National Breastfeeding Week is August 1-7. It’s a time for women all over the nation to celebrate the benefits of breastfeeding, honor their sacrifices to do so, and ensure that breastfeeding mothers have the support they need. The week is meant as a time of celebration, unity, and support for breastfeeding mothers.

But what if this week feels like another slap in the face, yet another reminder of your dirty secret?

What if you are struggling to breastfeed?

10 Indoor Summer Activities for Busy Kids

COVID + Texas summer = lots of time indoors. It’s too hot to do much outside, and too risky to do anything indoors in a public place. So if you’re starting to lose it a little (like me!), try some of these indoor activities that your kids will love. They’re all a little out of the box- no crafting or baking here- because we’ve all been there, done that at least a thousand times by now. These activities are all screen-free and will engage your kids’ minds and bodies!

THE FLOOR IS LAVA

The new Netflix show, The Floor is Lava, has reinvigorated the classic game that requires no pieces, no boards, and very few rules. The only rule is… don’t touch the ground because THE FLOOR IS LAVA! But really, Mommas, you can set as many or as few rules as you want. I let my kids get a little crazy with this one, but if that’s not your jam, just have them scale it back a little.

IKEA FORTS

At the beginning of quarantine, in true IKEA fashion, IKEA released instructions on how to build six amazing furniture forts. Even if you don’t have the exact pieces required to follow the directions to the letter, you can just fudge it a little with other household items. (Just like building actual IKEA furniture!)

STAIRS SLIDE

Growing up, my friends and I just bumped and tumbled all the way to the bottom of the stairs in sleeping bags. But parents have gotten smarter (and safer) with turning their stairs into indoor slides these days. Check out Everyday Best’s take on turning the stairs into a playground! Don’t forget a helmet!

IMG_2811 2.jpg

SOLO CUP BUILDING CONTEST

The other day, we were desperate. But then I remembered the giant bag of red plastic cups we had collecting dust in the pantry. So we turned them into a building contest! And then once the contest turned into tears (I mean…), we just built whatever the kids wanted with them. This was a full-day activity, you guys. I left the cups out and they just kept coming back for more!

DOMINO RALLY

Gather up all those Mexican Train dominos and build a domino rally! Who will be the first domino to fall? My kids like to incorporate a few toys like Hot Wheels cars into their building. Need inspiration? There are tons of domino rally videos on YouTube. Once you’re rally is over, have a domino game!

PLAY SCHOOL

Try as I might, I cannot get my kids to willingly cooperate in summertime academic skills building. But they will listen to each other! Let the kids take turns “teaching” each other to sharpen those academic skills. Provide them with a few materials- worksheets, books, and a white board- and watch them get to work!

PLAY STORE

My kids love to play store! It makes a bit of a mess, but desperate times call for desperate messes. They gather up items like toys or canned goods and packaged items from the pantry and make price tags for each one (small squares of paper they write a price on and tape to the item). Then they arrange the store and take turns “shopping.” Whoever isn’t the shopper is the cashier with our play cash register. If you don’t have play money or a cash register, have the kids make their own!

SHADOW PUPPETS

This is best done in a fort (see the IKEA fort suggestion above) and it’s super simple. Get a flashlight and have fun making interesting animals or other design shadows on the side of the fort or a wall- anywhere it’s dark. For added appeal, they can use Barbies, action figures, stuffies, or anything that will make a fun shadow.

IMG_2803 2.jpg

TACKLE BOX ORGANIZATION

Chances are, your kid collects something. And chances are, that something is all over your house. Now is the perfect time to tame that rock/shell/stick/bug/leaf/
feather/jewelry collection! And for some reason, bringing a tackle box into the equation makes kids rise to the occasion. In fact, my kids get their tackle boxes out to rearrange, reorganize, or just admire their collections fairly regularly.

BIRD WATCHING

Step 1- Install a backyard bird feeder. Step 2- If you build it, they will come. Watch from a window as the birds (and probably squirrels) flock to your backyard feeder. Keep a bird watching guidebook on hand to identify your backyard guests. Binoculars are a fun touch as well.

If you speed through these activities and need some more, check out my post, 50 Fun and Free Things to Do When You’re Stuck Inside! Good luck out there, Mommas. May the odds be ever in OUR favor.

Best Beach Reads for Moms (Even If You're Not at the Beach)

I think we could all use a bit of escapism right now. But what’s a mom to do when her beach vacation has been canceled? Enter the “beach read,” a book that is easy to read, fares well with continual interruptions, and is a fast read while also being a page-turner. Add these to your cart, whether you’re at a real beach or winging it in your own backyard. (Note: I’ve read a lot of these, but not all. Because kids. But all these titles come highly recommended from personally trusted sources. Thanks, friends who helped create this list! All descriptions come from Amazon.)

Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes bestselling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast.

They're polar opposites.

In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block.

Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. She'll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he'll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no one will fall in love. Really.

Agreeing to go to a wedding with a guy she gets stuck with in an elevator is something Alexa Monroe wouldn't normally do. But there's something about Drew Nichols that's too hard to resist.

On the eve of his ex's wedding festivities, Drew is minus a plus one. Until a power outage strands him with the perfect candidate for a fake girlfriend....

After Alexa and Drew have more fun than they ever thought possible, Drew has to fly back to Los Angeles and his job as a pediatric surgeon, and Alexa heads home to Berkeley, where she's the mayor's chief of staff. Too bad they can't stop thinking about the other....

They're just two high-powered professionals on a collision course toward the long distance dating disaster of the century--or closing the gap between what they think they need and what they truly want....

Everyone knows DAISY JONES & THE SIX, but nobody knows the reason behind their split at the absolute height of their popularity . . . until now.
Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock ’n’ roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the seventies. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with Daisy Jones & The Six, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice.

Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect; and to 15-year-old Bee, she is her best friend and, simply, Mom.

Then Bernadette vanishes. It all began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle -- and people in general -- has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic.

To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, and secret correspondence -- creating a compulsively readable and surprisingly touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter's role in an absurd world.

Welcome to Greenwich, Connecticut, where the lawns and the women are perfectly manicured, the Tito’s and sodas are extra strong, and everyone has something to say about the infamous new neighbor.

Let’s be clear: Emily Charlton does not do the suburbs. After leaving Miranda Priestly, she’s been working in Hollywood as an image consultant to the stars, but recently, Emily’s lost a few clients. She’s hopeless with social media. The new guard is nipping at her heels. She needs a big opportunity, and she needs it now.

When Karolina Hartwell, a gorgeous former supermodel, is arrested, her fall from grace is merciless. Her senator-husband leaves her, her Beltway friends disappear, and the tabloids pounce.

In Karolina, Emily finds her comeback opportunity. But she quickly learns Greenwich is a world apart and that this comeback needs a team approach.

So it is that Emily, the scorned Karolina, and their mutual friend Miriam, a powerful attorney turned stay-at-home mom, band together to navigate the social land mines of suburban Greenwich and win back the hearts of the American public. Along the way, an unexpected ally emerges in one Miranda Priestly.

A sassy, sexy, sometimes poignant look at small town Southern life, as only New York Times bestseller Mary Kay Andrews can tell it, The Fixer Upper is a must-read for fans of Fannie Flagg, Sophie Kinsella, the Ya-Yas, and the Sweet Potato Queens, and for every reader obsessed with decorating and home repair. It is a truly delectable story of a woman whose professional fall from grace lands her back in a hometown she never knew, amongst a gothic Southern family she’s never met, and saddled with a task she could never have imagined.

Keeley Murdock's wedding to A.J. Jernigan should have been the social event of the season. But all bets are off when she catches her fiancé; doing the deed with her maid of honor at the country club rehearsal dinner. The wedding's off, too, as Keeley pitches the hissy fit of the century, earning herself instant notoriety in the small town of Madison, Georgia.

Now A.J.'s unscrupulous banking family is bringing financial pressure to bear on Keeley's interior design business. But a redheaded stranger in a vintage yellow Cadillac is riding to her rescue. Will Mahoney, the new owner of a failing local bra plant, is about to offer the designing woman just what she needs: a plum decorating assignment, a chance to clear her name, and a golden opportunity to give her cheating varmint of an ex-fiancé; the comeuppance he so richly deserves.

Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy.

But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kinds of friends who rescue one another from the lives of isolation they have each been living. And it is Raymond’s big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one.

Soon to be a major motion picture produced by Reese Witherspoon, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is the smart, warm, and uplifting story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes. . .

And if you’re looking for something a little dark and scary, I suggest…

What should be a cozy and fun-filled weekend deep in the English countryside takes a sinister turn in Ruth Ware’s suspenseful, compulsive, and darkly twisted psychological thriller.

Sometimes the only thing to fear…is yourself.

When reclusive writer Leonora is invited to the English countryside for a weekend away, she reluctantly agrees to make the trip. But as the first night falls, revelations unfold among friends old and new, an unnerving memory shatters Leonora’s reserve, and a haunting realization creeps in: the party is not alone in the woods.

Outdoor Frisco Activities Guaranteed to Please

Well, here we are again, friends, with COVID Round 2 shutting down any chance for traditional summer fun. BUT WAIT! There are still tons of fun, safe, and socially-distanced things to do in Frisco. My family and I have participated in all of the following local activities in the last year and personally recommend all of them. Get out your (empty) planner and pencil several of these in!

FRISCO SNOW CONE LADY

The Frisco Snow Cone Lady is a true Frisco institution. In business since 1983, the Snow Cone Lady has been serving up the best snow cones in North Texas for more than 35 years. Her list of flavors is almost endless and includes classic flavors such as cherry, tiger’s blood, and piña colada, as well as Snow Cone Lady specific flavors like the Frisco Favorite and Honeymooner’s Delight. Be sure to visit the Snow Cone Lady in her caboose-esque shop in the Rail District at least a few times this summer. (Pro tip: Follow the Frisco Snow Cone Lady on Facebook for real-time hours and weather-related updates; she doesn’t always stick to a set schedule.)

SPASH PADS AND SPRAY PARKS

The City of Frisco maintains 3 public splash pads in Frisco. They are located at Frisco Commons Park, Shepherd’s Glen Park, and J.R. Newman Park. We’ve been to a couple of these already this summer and have experienced zero crowds. Hopefully that trend will continue when you go because sometimes the only cure for the Texas heat is a good splash! While the water is not chlorinated, it is also not recycled. Only fresh water here!

SKATE PARK

Did you know that Frisco has it’s own skate park at Northeast Community Park? If your kids are involved in skateboarding, scootering, bike riding, or rollerblading, they’ll love a day at the skate park! For younger or less experienced riders, I recommend hitting up the skate park early in the morning before it fills up with teenagers who fly through the place at break-neck speeds. And don’t forget the helmets and pads!

BICENTENNIAL PARK

When my children were little, our favorite community playground was at Bicentennial Park, but they started to outgrow it over the years. However, the City of Frisco has recently re-done Bicentennial Park and it is back to being our favorite! They have installed a couple of zip lines, a super tall play structure, and the world’s coolest suspended merry-go-round. It’s perfect for entertaining my not-so-little-anymore kids. (Note that the pictures on the City of Frisco Bicentennial Park page still show the old equipment.)

LIMESTONE QUARRY PARK

I debated spilling the beans on this one because I kind of want to keep it as my own little secret. But we’re all on this struggle bus together, so here it is! Limestone Quarry Park has a great playground that my kids love! We also really enjoy taking our bikes and biking the Taychas Trail to and from the park. But the hidden gem here is behind and below the playground at Limestone Quarry Park. Behind the play structure area, you’ll see a small, unmarked trail that leads downhill to a little creek. The trail ends at a perfect creek play area, complete with small waterfall, rocks to skip, and a swimmin’ hole. It’s a Frisco Oasis! (Pro tip: Wear water shoes or tennis shoes you don’t mind getting wet- flip flops will just float away. That limestone is hard on the feet.)
